IS AN SMSF RIGHT FOR ME?

There are a number of reasons why people decide to setup an SMSF, the most common reasons and advantages include:


CONTROL

You decide where you superannuation money is invested.


COST SAVINGS

SMSF fees tend to be relatively fixed whereas retail funds charge a percentage fee based on the fund balance.


FLEXIBILITY

SMSFs allow you to seamlessly move between accumulation and pension phase without having to sell investments and potentially trigger capital gains tax.


Franking credits attached to share investments can be offset against tax payable on investment income or contributions.


Business owners can own their business premises inside their SMSF and make tax deductible rent payments to the fund.


SMSF are able to borrow money to invest in assets.


Public (Retail) funds don't have these benefits.


WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES?

Responsibility - Not everyone is comfortable taking on the legal, administrative and investment responsibility associated with operating an SMSF.


Time Commitment - An SMSF will always require more involvement than other superannuation alternatives.
